The Indians thought they had agreed to a day-and-a-half walk—not a race—to fulfill the terms of a mysterious old treaty recently discovered.

Now, as the white walkers sprint away, the Indian walker Combush fears his hotheaded brother Shickess is probably right: this is just another “pen and ink” trick to take their lands. Combush befriends Matt Scull, a young Quaker along to help his father mark the new boundaries. The boys soon uncover the secrets behind the “walk.”

Together, they plot to right this wrong and preserve the fragile peace that Shickess wants to break. But can their plan work before time runs out?
